Co-Founder and Lead Developer, Liner Shipping Specialist and Maritime Logistics Advisor
Niels brings a special combination of academic leadership and cross-industry expertise to LinerGame. Over nearly two decades, he has worked as a senior researcher and research leader at Danish and European universities, leading research and innovation projects spanning multiple shipping segments; focused on making maritime operations and logistics more digital, sustainable, efficient, and resilient.
His work extends well beyond ship operations. Published research and project leadership covers ship fuel consumption optimisation, vessel speed strategies accounting for ocean currents, route planning using AIS data, and commercial processes for forecasting, pricing, and capacity management in the liner shipping industry. In recent years, Niels has also led research and innovation projects focused on scaling the manufacturing and supply of future green fuels for the maritime industry.
At Maersk Line, Niels served as Process Excellence Implementation Manager, working at the intersection of operational and commercial efficiency, data quality, and cross-functional collaboration. He witnessed firsthand how poor processes and data and integration quality undermine decision-making across commercial and operational teams.
With 15+ years of experience collaborating with or working within more than 20 shipping operators, ports, technology vendors, energy suppliers, and industry associations across Denmark and Europe, Niels brings a broad and pragmatic perspective to maritime logistics challenges.
Niels co-invented LinerGame and continues to refine its game mechanics, scenarios, and training materials. He also founded VizTrack, a start-up developing digital vision and tracking solutions for cargo stowage operations in RoRo shipping (steeped in research from the ECOPRODIGI/EXOPRODIGI projects) and developed the RoRo Shipping Game with research colleagues, extending simulation-based learning to new shipping segments. His technical depth ensures every workshop reflects real-world complexity while remaining accessible to professional audiences.
